What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. There are many facets, techniques and features with SEO, but the main intention is to optimise your website so that it appears high in the Search Engine Results Page (SERP’s), such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. SEO can be broken down into two main areas; on-page SEO and off-page SEO.
What Is On-Page SEO?
On-page SEO involves everything that occurs on all of your website pages. When a “GoogleBot” crawls your website page, you can help to share what your website is about, by including keywords and phrases in part of your website code, such as; meta titles, descriptions, meta keywords, image alt tags, h1, h2, h3 tags etc. Utilising keywords throughout your website content is another key factor for SEO. The trick is to use phrases that users may input into a search engine, so that your website appears in the search engine rankings, and users can find you.
What Is Off-Page SEO?
Off-page SEO occurs away from your website, and mainly includes link building. This is where blogging and using social media can greatly assist with the performance of your website with SEO. Search Engines such as Google prefer websites which have many links linking to them, as it builds their credibility and trust.
What Is Meant By "White Hat" and "Black Hat" SEO?
There are different methods to achieve SEO results for your website. By using “white hat” techniques, these consist of the correct methods that follow Google’s SEO rulebook, such as those listed above in oon-page and off-page SEO. Some SEO consultants incorporate “black hat” SEO, which is seen as the dirty side of SEO. These are known to artifically inflate rankings, for e.g. by buying links to your website rather than earning them. Black Hat SEO is all about the short term gain, and where it may get you high in SERP’s quickly, some websites have been known of getting black listed by using “black hat” SEO.
How Long Will It Take For My Website To Show Up In Google Searches?
This mainly depends on the level of competition that you have, in relation to the keywords that you are targeting. For e.g. the keyword “handmade jewellery”, may experience quite alot of competition as this is a very broad term. However by specifying keywords (long tail searches), and perhaps including your location, can greatly assist you for ranking higher. For e.g. “Handmade Macrame Jewellery York”. You can usually achieve ranking in search engines for your brand name after a few weeks of indexing the website. Ranking for other keywords may take 6-12 months to appear in SERP’s. Search engines favour websites with an “aged domain”, so basically the longer that you have your website for, the higher the chance that it will appear in SERP’s. Finally, search engines like websites which have been edited, and are continually being updated. This shows to search engines that a website is current, and the best way to achieve this is by having a blog page on your website.
